I remember reading Vine's take on the 'camel through a needle's eye' stating that there was no such historical evidence to the modern day teaching, which really impressed me, since I had a conviction that all these stories that were circulating from 'pastors/teacher' seemed dubious. Then, later on, I discovered Lamsa's Peshitta, and learned that Greek was not the language of the original New Testament, but rather Aramaic was, and furthermore the Aramaic word for 'rope' very closely resembles 'camel', shown in imagery side-by-side. What Jesus actually said, according to the Aramaic manuscripts of the gospels, was 'It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.' Thanks a lot man, I actually had that issue sent to me but I didn't get into them until the next issue so I musta missed that one. I'll try and upload Pleasure to Kill by Kreator, because lots of people here seem to like that kind of thrash.hopefully it won't take too long though. Also, is there any way to get around having to wait 75 min. In between each Rapidshare download? Because whenever i try and do one right after another it says, 'You have downloaded 'X'KB. I posted at least 10 times in this thread (which might not be much but i try), but i didnt have time to post after the last upload as i had band prac and got home and my dad was on here. I do check the request list often and as soon as i see something i have i upload it. Unfortunatly my limited collection means that that has only been 2 albums this months but im trying. Anyway if you'll re-consider i'll contribute more and kick my dad off more often (although its his birthday tomorrow and that would be mean). If you do put me on im going away for the week end so i wont post until late Sun/Mon morning. The guy after said something about if you could do TSSTB it would be great. Anyway i'll upload IKSOSE3 anyway and if you want all the recognition i wont send the link. If you simply come into the thread once a week and say 'Hey thanks for such n such'. I won't take you off the list. You don't have to ever upload anything. But what I really like is for people to talk about the new music that they are being exposed to, that is supposed to be the point of this thread. If anyone wants it, i have a link in my emails somewhere to Death - Symbolic, it's on uploading.com and is an old link with a slow download speed, but it still works. It's another thing i found off an old mailing list. YSI is decent. I'll give it that. However, it's prone to fucking up half way through an upload, and thus I have to restart. That's really inconvenient. It also doesn't have an upload status bar, which can be annoying. Perhaps your IC is the problem? I never have YSI crap out on me. Status bar doesn't mean shit. The upload will finish when it does. Megaupload is a joke. It has pop-ups. You have to click through an advertisement page before you can even start to 'wait for your download'. And frankly, it is much more reliable than anything else anyway. I agree 100% with that. The latest (2011 or so, the one with a bonus CD) version of Human sounds really different because, in the first place, it's a remix, not just another remaster. The remix fixes the standard 'problem' (or rather the old-school recording approach) with the bass making its parts/notes actually audible. Also, it changes some little things here and there (mostly related to drums panning) but, overall, the album still sounds like Human. If you can tolerate the average DR of 7 dB (i.e. No head-room to speak of, but listenable nevertheless), I would recommend to go with the new remix/remaster. The Patterns remix is a different beast - it's rather a fascinating alternative listen, because the drums have absolutely different and more straightforward sound/feel to them - as opposed to the pretty 'small' drum sound of the original. Try before you buy (although I find the bonus CD in the Patterns set essential - it has a terrific, if occasionally out-of-tune, live set from the period). Although dynamics are squashed almost twice (12 vs 6bd), these do sound pretty good. Sound is bigger and fuller, especially on P atterns, IMO, although I admit I haven't listened to the original in a while. Human sounds cleaner and with more pronounced drums. Although studying is considered a legitimate scientific nowadays, it is still a very young one. In the early 1970s, a psychologist named J. Guilford was one of the first academic researchers who dared to conduct a study of creativity. One of Guilford’s most famous studies was the nine-dot puzzle. With all due respect, Professor Boyd, your argument is not at all compelling. It seems that you are taking the 'thinking outside the box' (TOTB) metaphor much more. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page. Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the 1970s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century. If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square. The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the area defined by the dots. At the first stages, all the participants in Guilford’s original study censored their own thinking by limiting the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square (even those who eventually solved the puzzle). Even though they weren’t instructed to restrain themselves from considering such a solution, they were unable to “see” the white space beyond the square’s boundaries. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box. The idea went viral (via 1970s-era media and word of mouth, of course). Overnight, it seemed that creativity gurus everywhere were teaching managers how to think outside the box. Consultants in the 1970s and 1980s even used this puzzle when making sales pitches to prospective clients. Because the solution is, in hindsight, deceptively simple, clients tended to admit they should have thought of it themselves. Because they hadn’t, they were obviously not as creative or smart as they had previously thought, and needed to call in creative experts. Or so their consultants would have them believe. The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase “thinking outside the box” became metaphors for creativity and spread like wildfire in, management, psychology, the creative arts, engineering, and personal improvement circles. There seemed to be no end to the insights that could be offered under the banner of thinking outside the box. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking. It was an appealing and apparently convincing message. Indeed, the concept enjoyed such strong popularity and intuitive appeal that no one bothered to check the facts. No one, that is, before two different research —Clarke Burnham with Kenneth Davis, and Joseph Alba with Robert Weisberg—ran another experiment using the same puzzle but a different research procedure. Both teams followed the same protocol of dividing participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told that the solution required the lines to be drawn outside the imaginary box bordering the dot array. In other words, the “trick” was revealed in advance. Would you like to guess the percentage of the participants in the second group who solved the puzzle correctly? Most people assume that 60 percent to 90 percent of the group given the clue would solve the puzzle easily. In fact, only a meager 25 percent did. What’s more, in statistical terms, this 5 percent improvement over the subjects of Guilford’s original study is insignificant. In other words, the difference could easily be due to what statisticians call sampling error. Let’s look a little more closely at these surprising results. Solving this problem requires people to literally think outside the box. Yet participants’ performance was not improved even when they were given specific instructions to do so. That is, direct and explicit instructions to think outside the box did not help. That this advice is useless when actually trying to solve a problem involving a real box should effectively have killed off the much widely disseminated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking spurs creativity. After all, with one simple yet brilliant experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth. Of course, in real life you won’t find boxes. But you will find numerous situations where a creative breakthrough is staring you in the face. They are much more common than you probably think. *From Copyright 2014 Drew Boyd. There are many theories of creativity. What the latest experiment proves is not that creativity lacks any association to thinking outside-the-box, but that such is not conditioned by acquired knowledge, i.e., environmental concerns. For example, there have been some theories such as those of Schopenhauer (see his remarks about Genius) and Freud (see his remarks about Sublimation) that propose creativity is something more like a capacity provided by nature rather than one acquired or learned from the environment. Rather than disproving the myth, in other words, the experiment might instead offer evidence that creativity is an ability that one is born with, or born lacking, hence why information from the environment didn't impact the results at all. It's an interesting experiment, but the author's conclusion cannot possibly follow from the results of it. I conduct soft skills training and outbound training for Corporates and individuals. To enhance creativity we motivate the participants to approach the problems from variety of vantage points. Even repeatedly checking the boundary conditions we are able to come up with variety of ways of solving the problem. This is akin to checking the walls of the box. Looking inside the box for additional information, additional resources also helps. Looking at the box from bird's eye view triggers some different creative solutions. Let us not get tied down to the mechanics but free ourselves to find the solution. I will give an example. You are playing football with family and friends at a distant ground and someone gets bruised badly. No first aid kit is available. Your priority is to get the person to a hospital ( at a distance of 2 hours ). The wound is bleeding and needs to be kept clean and bacteria free till the person reaches the hospital. What will you do? Think of a solution. It is quite close to you. With all due respect, Professor Boyd, your argument is not at all compelling. It seems that you are taking the 'thinking outside the box' (TOTB) metaphor much more literally than it is intended (or, at least, as I and may others infer). Let me point out a few false and/or negligent statements that you make: 1. To refer to TOTB as 'dangerous' is naive, at best. I, personally, have seen the positive, tranformative effects of not only the 9-dots exercise, but also the occasional use of the term to remind individuals after-the-fact about the value of thinking differently. The experiment you refer to doesn't even come close to proving what you suggest that it does. To use the term 'proving' in an argument like this is laughable. In real life, you absolutely WILL find boxes.that is, if you understand what the term 'box' refers to. Here, the term is not literal; rather, it refers to a mindset, a perspective, a belief, or an assumption. It is precisely how the human mind works. We all think in boxes all the time. The 'sin,' if you will, is not in thinking inside of a box.but the neglect to readily switch from one box to another, nimbly (see Alan Iny's new book, 'Thinking in New Boxes'). A different -- and very healthy, positive, and productive -- way to think about TOTB is to understand that it merely represents an insight that can remind an individual to consciously become aware of limiting assumptions. And, upon such awareness, to open ones mind and imagination to actively explore new possibilities beyond the obvious or initial answer. If you don't regard this as valid contribution to creativity, then I suggest you consider spending a bit more time outside of that 'box' that you've presented here. I couldn't have said it any better. TOTB is a beautiful skill to have. We are born into multiple boxes that are created upon social agreements (e.g. Illustrated by the hermeneutic circle) but the ones who dare to think outside of what is considered as social or scientific correct (all the boxes together) are the minds whom are absolute free and open towards new moralities, paradigms, innovations and creativity in general. Saying that TOTB is a negative thing is a very conservative statement and someone who has such a belief is scared of change, scared of diversity and scared of anything that is abstract and out of order. I'm all about TOTB and the best way to TOTB is to fully understand the box in the first place and why some people are scared of TOTB hence also lacking the ability to do so. Fold the paper so all the dots ovelap. Use four lines to connect four dots. Hold the folded paper up to the light.all dots connected; Thinking outside The Box. People that say, it's a misguided idea,, do not know how to think outside the box, I can look /listen/ at anything an tell you how to fix it. I play chess with my pc, an beat it all the time, and the reasoning is I do not think logically, like the pc does. It has a set of rules that it was programed with an you were in college, I do not play by the rules, I can play without the queen. Also when you go the a school that teaches how to think about something, that is all you know how to do.I have had engineers come to my deck, hand me a set of blueprints, because that was the way they were taught. They are never taught to look at it, in there mind to see it working. What I do is show them how wrong they are, an ask them what tool in the world can cut a square hole inside the middle of two long tubes. They can not think outside the box, that they were taught to do. If was going to tell you about an airplane the TR-3B, it travels a little bit under light speed, an it uses nuclear fusion, which turns into plasma an powers the craft, that was built outside the box. An if you do not believe me type it into your search engine, you can also look it up at the library of congress under new patients. You my brother, do not have the inkling of understanding to think outside the box. That's why you are a psychologist an nothing more. When he shows up one day to extort money from her, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor. Overhearing the commotion, Yasuko’s next door neighbor, middle-aged high school mathematics teacher Ishigami, offers his help, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step. When the body turns up and is identified, Detective Kusanagi draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko’s manufactured alibi and yet is still sure that there’s something wrong. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa, known to the police by the nickname Professor Galileo, went to college with Ishigami. After meeting up with him again, Yukawa is convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder. What ensues is a high level battle of wits, as Ishigami tries to protect Yasuko by outmaneuvering and outthinking Yukawa, who faces his most clever and determined opponent yet. The success of the mystery is in direct proportion to the amount of mystification. In this novel, Keigo Higashimo presents a clever variation. The murder happens during the first and second chapters, and we immediately know who committed it! Yasuko, a single mother living alone with her daughter is forced to kill her ex-husband in self-defence. When she plans to turn herself in, her neighbour Ishigami, a reclusive mathematical genius who is obsessed with her, prevents it. He concocts a seemingly unbreakable alibi for mother and daughter: however, unfortunately for Ishigami, the physicist and amateur sleuth Manabu Yukawa, his former classmate and genius of equal standing is on the case. What follows is a absorbing cat-and-mouse game between the two, with really devastating denouement. The core of the mystery is not new - I can remember the same plot device used in at least three more stories by other authors (no, I won't reveal which stories they are!). I should have seen the ending coming, but I was taken in by a simple ploy by the author. There is a big plot hole - the police immediately zeroing in on Yasuko and her daughter is unbelievable - but we can condone that in such a tightly written story. What fascinated me, and raised this book to four stars, was the tussle between the mathematician - who delights in creating insoluble puzzles - and the physicist interested in tweaking out nature's laws from her behaviour, and building mathematical models for the same. The P=NP problem - whether it is easier to work out a solution to problem by oneself, or to check whether another's solution for the same is correct or not - seems to me fascinating. ---------------------------------------- PS: I read this book because of the Malayalam blockbuster movie ('Visual'), rumoured to be plagiarised from it. While the movie is in all probability inspired by this story, it is not a copy, and a refreshingly new take on the 'unbreakable alibi'. The Devotion of Suspect X is a must-read for anyone who appreciates police procedurals, mysteries, math, Japan, literature... I could go on. The Devotion of Suspect X is the third in the Detective Galileo series, but I didn't once have the impression that I lacked background or relationship information gleaned from the initial 2 books. In fact, there were no references to prior cases or mysteries to suggest that earlier books existed. If not for the publishers blurbs on the book, I'd not have The Devotion of Suspect X is a must-read for anyone who appreciates police procedurals, mysteries, math, Japan, literature... I could go on. In fact, there were no references to prior cases or mysteries to suggest that earlier books existed. If not for the publishers blurbs on the book, I'd not have guessed they did. So why is The Devotion of Suspect X an excellent read? The lead detective, Kusanagi, is a normal, standard, by-the-book, thoughtful, straight arrow. What distinguishes this novel from other police procedurals is Kusanagi's friend, Yukawa, a physicist. Yukawa solves the mystery and cares deeply about the outcome. Ishigami, a high school math teacher whose brilliance and devotion to math are here allocated to assisting his ordinary, likable next door neighbor in covering up a murder, by employing masterful misdirection to focus the police on time-wasting, unimportant questions and issues. His efforts to motivate apathetic high school students won my respect and, at the same time, my pity. Otherwise, he's not an easy character to get to know or to feel anything about, except that Yukawa's concern for him makes the reader care. Nonetheless you respect his genius. The ending is one of the best I've ever read. The mystery is solved 20 pages before. It doesn't matter. There's many a thriller or mystery novelist who get an A+ for plot, but don't have a clue how to write a compelling ending. I read the last several paragraphs a few times over - they were just that good. The style of this novel is insanely plot-driven and at the same time calm, quiet, methodical, and thoughtful. No screeching tires. No bickering between the detectives. No threatening with guns. In an alternative universe where Lee Child is raised and lives in Japan, this might be the series he'd have written instead of the Jack Reacher books (which I also love, for different reasons, and which are culturally and quintessentially American). Off to find my next Detective Galileo book. This has been one of the top thrillers I have read this year and this story is like nothing I have ever read. I will talk more about this in my review. What happens when the investigation is being done by a genius and the cover-up by a mastermind. This book was like an intense chess match and after each move from one end there was another counter-move from the other end. The twists in the last few chapters had my mind reeling. I think part of the main twist in the book is somewhat similar to a twist in one of Agatha Christie's novel [ ] The final end was like a punch in the gut. It made me sit back and think about everything that happened in the book and if the ending any different would have been more satisfying. Not sure, maybe this is the best way it could have ended. There are surprises to the very last paragraph. This novel was an enormous success in Japan. Not only was it on the best-seller list, but it also won the prestigious Naoki prize for best novel and it was subsequently turned into a film which was a box-office hit. Is the third book of the 'Detective Galileo' series by the author. The reason why I believe it has managed to attain such popularity, is because the book has broken free from the shackles of the typical 'whodunnit' format. The reason why I believe it has managed to attain such popularity, is because the book has broken free from the shackles of the typical 'whodunnit' format. The author presents us with a greater challenge than wondering who the murderer is: he keeps us guessing about how the murder can be hidden, in order to make it a perfect crime. The premise of the story, as oft-repeated, is simple. Yasuko is a single mother to her teen-aged daughter Misato. She is frequently troubled by her ex-husband who reappears intermittently to extort money from her. One day, things go a little out of hand, and Yasuko, in a terrible fit of rage, ends up killing him. Her neighbor Ishigami, a high school maths teacher, comes to her rescue. He gives her the perfect alibi, with the perfect plan to cover up the murder. Investigating the murder is Detective Kusanagi, who finds himself drawn into one of his most puzzling cases. He can sense something is wrong, but can’t put his finger to it. Thus, he takes the help of his friend, Yukawa, a physist with a penchant to solve crimes, thus earning himself the title ‘Detective Galileo’. What follows next is the ensuing battle of wits between the two geniuses: Ishigami and Yukawa. As the story progresses, we are forced to wonder, in the author's own words, 'Which is harder: devising an unsolvable problem, or solving that problem'. I believe these two characters are the best sketched out, and they interested me the most. However, one down-side to the novel was the abysmally bad translation. The sentences were jerky, and the flavour of the book was destroyed by the limp sentences. So, it took me a while to ignore that and get drawn into the story. Also, towards the middle, it kind of did get a bit slow, and I wished there were some more twists or actions. On the whole it was quite an enjoyable read, but a few things were off the key which stopped me from loving it.However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to all those who would like to savour something out of the ordinary, on a wintery or rainy night. When the crime, perpetrator(s), and motive were revealed within the first few chapters, I was sure I would be in for an anticlimactic read. I love it when everything comes together like that. I finished reading the final 220 odd pages in less than 3 hours. That must be some kind of a personal best for me. And that is perhaps the biggest achievement of Keigo Higashino's 'The Devotion of Suspect X', the first in the Detective Galileo series. This novel achieved cult status in Japan & sold more than 2 million copies while also being made into a successful screen adaptation. When I was done reading this, I could see why. The story starts off in a quiet neighbourhood of Tokyo where a single woman Yasuko & her daughter Misato are living peacefully. Their neighbour Ishigami is a talented mathematician who now works as a school teacher. When Yasuko's ex-husband turns up on her doorstep on a fateful night, a moment of indiscretion from both mother & daughter results in wheels being set in motion. Ishigami somehow gets involved in all this & the situation develops into something from which no one can turn back to living their normal lives. Think I somewhat spoiled it for you already? Be rest assured, I haven't revealed what forms the essence of the plot. What follows is a fascinating cat-and-mouse game between Ishigami & Manabu Yukawa, an assistant physics professor & an amateur sleuth also known as 'Detective Galileo'. This book is not as much about the consequences of the crime as it is about how the crime was done & the possible reasons of committing the crime from the investigating officer's point of view. You know already who is guilty, but there are still so many aspects that remain unclear, which draws the reader into the tale. There are also a few sub-plots - one of them being an old connection between Ishigami & Yukawa, which makes their conversations delightful to read as they talk science & mathematical logic. But the narrative perhaps emerges as the biggest winner in this novel. The unique approach could have gone all wrong if the narrative would not have been tightly-written & perfectly paced. Full marks to the author as well as the translator Alexander O. Smith who retain the interest of the reader till the end & render us an absolute page-turner. I also liked how themes like infatuation, platonic love & devotion (yeah, it's in the title itself) were explored throughout the course of the story. I'm going with 4 stars for 'The Devotion of Suspect X' by Keigo Higashino. This is my first brush with Japanese literature, and my appetite craves for more. Highly recommended for fans of international crime fiction. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Tokyo Metropolitan Police In The Devotion of Suspect X, Ishigami and Yukawa try to outwit each other in this cops and robbers game. What Yukawa couldn’t fathom is the depth in which Ishigami is willing to devote himself to and ultimately sacrifice for Yasuko. This mystery is among the handful of mystery novels whose plots surprise me. And though I wish the key characters have more depth, the plot more than compensates for that flaw and the sparse prose pushes the plot along without extraneous verbiage. Smart and powerful. I almost wish Ishigami could triumph over Yukawa. I especially liked the cerebral nature of the story where we follow a police detective and his physicist/ professor friend Dr. Yukawa, aka Professor Galileo, as they try to determine who killed the ex-husband of a sandwich shop clerk, Yasuko Hanaoka. We, the readers, know from almost the very beginning that she killed him and that her neighbor, a shy math teacher, offered to help dispose of the body. So for us, this isn't so much a whodunit as a story of will they get caught... Will the police with the help of their friend Galileo, figure it out. And to add another layer, Galileo and the math teacher, Ishigami, went to school together and are both brainiacs! I loved the cat and mouse game of the police trying to figure this all out, and once Yasuko and her accomplice are suspected, trying to determine what they did and how to prove it. Galileo and Ishigami have a respect for each other's brain power, and I loved the conversations they had about constructing and solving difficult problems like this one. I did not figure out the solve, which slowly unfolded in a series of conversations, making this book a satisfyingly different read. Someone pointed out in our group discussion that in all Higashino's books, the victim is not a sympathetic character and the reader almost always is rooting for the perpetrators of the crime, something I don't think I've experienced before. This has whet my appetite for the next book in the series,, which I've already downloaded. Well, the next book that has been translated, that is. There’s clues enough to tease you but Higashino keeps throwing out curveballs. A clean translation of some direct, workmanlike prose that propels the story forward - this was a unique, to me, take on the thriller genre. Nggak, aku nggak lagi curhat kok. Sepandai-pandainya tupai melompat, akhirnya menjadi bukit. Iya, ini ndak nyambung. Tapi akhirnya kematian Togashi akhirnya diketahui polisi. Review selengkapnya on progress >>. 'The Devotion of Suspect X', by Japanese author Keigo Higashino, is an amazing police procedural puzzler of a mystery! When I started this novel, a recommendation from Poonam (Ok, if I mention, Poonam?), I did not have any idea about the novel. Later, I learned it is #3 in the Detective Galileo series. It absolutely can be read as a standalone, and I want to read the other books in the series. There were no issues regarding the translation from Japanese to English. Manabu Yukawa is nicknamed “Detective Galileo” by Tokyo detective Kusanagi. Yukawa is a physics professor who also is a genius. On some previous case, Kusanagi met Yukawa, discovering how adept the professor is at solving tricky crimes, so Kusanagi sometimes drops by the professor's classroom or laboratory to visit. Shinji Togashi's body is discovered by the Old Edogawa River by the police. Unknown to the detectives, his ex-wife Yasuko Hanaoka and her daughter from a previous marriage, Misato, killed him. But Togashi was a terrible person and he had been trying to force Yasuko to give him money - again. Yasuko had moved several times to hide from Togashi, but he always found her. This last time, though, there is a violent struggle and both Misato and Yasuko kill him. Their next door neighbor, Ishigama, who is a math teacher, hears it all. He has an unrequited crush on Yasuko. He tells Yasuko that he will take the body away and help her hide all evidence of the crime. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game, or perhaps, a chess game, which I think may be the more apt analogy, between the murderers and the police, and between Yukawa and Ishigama. It is an amazing coincidence, but Yukawa and Ishigama were friends in college, having been drawn together because both of them were the geniuses of the school. I LOVED this novel! Thank you Poonam for the recommendation. It has been a stunning read for me. I should admit, the story on occasion goes somewhat sensitive. They are taken to the base of the heroic Autobots, where their leader Optimus Prime explains that he and his team are from the planet Cybertron. As it turns out, the Autobots had a devastating war against the ruthless Megatron and his followers, the Decepticons long ago on Cybertron. While this is going on, Megatron returns from a three-year-long exile in deep space, bringing with him Dark Energon, a substance able to revive the dead and he sets out to raise an army of the undead and conquer Earth. In the conclusion to Darkness Rising, Megatron is seen in front of the Space Bridge waiting for his army of the undead to come through it; however, the Space Bridge explodes, and Megatron is seen no more. During this mini-series, Arcee’s partner, Cliffjumper is killed in the first episode, setting the tone for the series. In Jasper, Nevada, three young humans—Jack Darby, Miko Nakadai and Rafael Esquivel—are accidentally caught in the crossfire in a fight between giant, mechanical aliens that transform into ordinary vehicles. The three kids are taken to the base of the Autobots, where the Autobot leader Optimus Prime explains that he and his team are a race of autonomous robotic organisms from the far-off planet Cybertron, and they are fighting over their life-source, Energon, with the Decepticons, with whom they once had a war. The Decepticon leader Megatron returns from a three-year exile with a plan to exploit the properties of a mysterious substance called “Dark Energon”, which has the ability to turn the bodies of dead Transformers into zombies. The Autobots storm an Energon mine in search of their lost comrade Cliffjumper, only to discover that his dead body has been revived as a ravenous zombie by Dark Energon. After Megatron’s supposed death during the explosion that destroyed the Decepticons’ Space Bridge, Starscream assumes his master’s leadership. But Megatron is found barely alive in the wreckage of the Space Bridge. Megatron remained in stasis for a portion of the first season until he returned to power. New characters are introduced such as Bulkhead’s best friend, Wheeljack, a former member of a group of Autobots called Wreckers, Silas, leader of a group of human villains known as MECH, and the Decepticons known as Skyquake, Makeshift, Knock Out, Breakdown, and Airachnid. At the end of the season, the Autobots form an uneasy alliance with Megatron when Earth is threatened by an ancient enemy from the past called Unicron the Chaos Bringer. With the power of the Matrix of Leadership, Earth is saved from Unicron’s dark powers. But there comes a price. When Optimus surrenders the Matrix, he loses more than the collective wisdom of the Primes. He loses his own memory of his life as a Prime and reverts to his original identity of Orion Pax. Following Megatron’s supposed death, Starscream appoints himself as the new Decepticon leader. However, to his annoyance, he finds that the troops don’t respect him as much as they did Megatron and are weary towards him becoming leader. In order to gain their respect, Starscream awakens Skyquake, a legendary Decepticon warrior who was entombed in stasis on Earth for centuries, and attempts to recruit him into his new army. Meanwhile, Ratchet agrees to help Jack, Miko and Rafael with their school science projects, with explosive results. While on a scouting mission in the Arctic, Bulkhead and Bumblebee find a crashed space pod buried in the ice. They bring it back to base for examination, and Optimus Prime and Arcee venture out into the Arctic to find clues on the pod’s origin. While they are out, the other Autobots discover that the pod contains a large swarm of Scraplets, a vicious and highly dangerous form of Cybertronian wildlife that eats metal. The Scraplets infest the Autobot base, devouring any metal in sight and damaging the Ground Bridge, leaving Optimus and Arcee stranded in the Arctic. The Autobots receive a message from Wheeljack, an old friend of Bulkhead’s from the days of the war, who is visiting Earth while journeying across the galaxy. Upon picking up the message’s signal, Starscream and Soundwave capture Wheeljack before he can meet the Autobots, and they send in Makeshift, a Decepticon spy able to take on any form, disguised as Wheeljack to discover the location of the Autobot base. Agent Fowler asks for the Autobots’ assistance in transporting a powerful nuclear device to a military base, but since sending such a device through the Ground Bridge could be potentially dangerous, they have to travel by road. Along the way, the Autobots are ambushed by M.E.C.H., a terrorist organization who wish to steal the nuclear device and use it for their own nefarious purposes. The Autobots discover that an Energon Harvester, an ancient and powerful device from Cybertron’s distant past, is on display in a museum, and they attempt to retrieve it with Jack, Miko and Rafael’s aid before it falls into the wrong hands. Starscream also learns of the Harvester’s whereabouts, and he sends Soundwave, along with new Decepticons Knock Out and Breakdown, to obtain it. In an attempt to get even with school bully Vince, as well as impress his crush Sierra, Jack convinces Bumblebee to help him win an illegal street race. However, things go awry when Knock Out gets involved in the action, kidnapping Vince in the belief that he is Bumblebee’s human partner. Jack accompanies Arcee on a routine scouting mission in a forest, where they discover a crashed space ship in a clearing. They soon discover that the owner of the ship, the deadly and ruthless Decepticon Airachnid, is still prowling the forest in search of a human to hunt, putting Jack in danger. While exploring the wreckage of a crashed Autobot spaceship in a desert, Optimus Prime becomes infected with Cybonic Plague, a deadly virus that leaves him in a critical condition. Arcee and Bumblebee sneak on to the Nemesis in order to find a cure for the virus. Following Ratchet’s advice, Arcee hooks Bumblebee to Megatron’s machinery and sends him into Megatron’s subconscious, where Megatron’s knowledge of the cure is located. Arcee immediately unplugs Bumblebee from the machinery as soon as the formula is captured. Megatron’s subconscious is mistakenly downloaded into Bumblebee’s head. Megatron manipulates Bumblebee’s mind in a plan to return to his original body and reclaim Decepticon leadership. Meanwhile, Starscream steals the lens from a powerful space telescope and attempts to use it to melt through Arctic ice to gain access to an underground Energon deposit. Megatron makes swift work of Starscream after learning of his treachery. Starscream attempts to use a shard of Dark Energon to revive the dead body of Skyquake, but his plan is impeded by the Autobots. The Autobots request a Ground Bridge transport at the same time with Starscream. Hence, the two Ground Bridges appear at once, causing a malfunction that leaves Jack, Miko and Rafael in a parallel dimension, along with the revived but zombified body of Skyquake. Miko is still able to communicate Bulkhead through cell phone texting, and Ratchet is able to bring them back after engineering a Ground Bridge designed to connect the other dimension. During a fight with Bulkhead in an abandoned town, Breakdown is captured by M.E.C.H., who wish to dismantle him and research his inner workings for a project they refer to as “Project: Chimera”. Optimus Prime and Starscream lead separate rescue missions to save Breakdown. Airachnid teams up with M.E.C.H. In a plot to kidnap Jack’s mother, June, intending to use her as bait to lure Jack and Arcee to M.E.C.H.’s hideout, so Arcee can be captured and used in M.E.C.H.’s experiments. Bulkhead and Arcee, with Miko tagging along, are sent on a reconnaissance mission to investigate a bizarre energy signal. They discover that the signal is coming from a Polarity Gauntlet, a weapon that manipulates magnetic fields, however, they soon come into conflict with Breakdown and Airachnid, who both want the Gauntlet for themselves. Bulkhead, Arcee, Jack and Miko investigate an old Decepticon Energon mine that was supposedly stripped clean. Megatron and Starscream arrive shortly after, with Megatron accusing Starscream of hoarding Energon, and revealing that he knows about Starscream’s other treacherous acts. Megatron is about to kill his devious second-in-command when he notices Jack and Arcee, and immediately opens fire on them. This accidentally causes a massive cave-in, leaving everyone trapped inside the mine with no way out. Megatron sends Starscream and Airachnid to the site of a crashed Decepticon ship to recover The Immobilizer, a powerful weapon with the ability to freeze Transformers in their tracks. But after the Autobots discover Starscream bound up in Airachnid’s web, they are surprised when Starscream states that he wishes to join them Note: This episode is dedicated to the memory of Captain H.L. Larry Cullen (Peter Cullen’s older brother who helped inspire Optimus Prime’s voice In US Version), who died in March 2011. Miko rushes out onto the battlefield during a fight between the Autobots and the Decepticons, who are fighting over a Data Cylinder, a device containing knowledge of Cybertronian society. As Miko attempts to push the Cylinder into an open Ground Bridge, she accidentally activates it, which downloads all of its information – in this case the formula for a Synthetic Energon – into Bulkhead’s brain. Soon, Bulkhead begins to rhyme off the complicated formula, painting the equation on the walls, and Miko becomes scared when her friend’s personality and memories begin to slip away. Ratchet tests the Synthetic Energon formula obtained by Bulkhead on the Data Cylinder on engines. Feeling the desire to take a more active role in the missions, he injects himself with the formula. At first the results are positive, with the formula greatly increasing Ratchet’s strength, speed and agility. But before long, the formula starts to have negative effects on his personality. Optimus Prime recites a passage from the Covenant of Primus, detailing a doomsday prophecy connected to Earth and involving Megatron. After Megatron attacks Rafael and Bumblebee, leaving Rafael unconscious and severely injured, Optimus realizes that he can’t end the Autobot-Decepticon conflict diplomatically, and decides to confront Megatron and destroy him once and for all. Season Finale After assisting the Autobots in a fight against an army of Unicron’s stone avatars, Megatron forms an uneasy alliance with his enemies to defeat Unicron and save the Earth from destruction. The Autobots and Megatron then travel to the Earth’s core, planning to send Unicron back into stasis using the Matrix of Leadership. Following the events of the finale of the first season, Optimus, as Orion, is converted into a Decepticon when Megatron takes advantage of his amnesia. Jack goes on a mission to help the Autobots restore Optimus’ memory and they eventually succeed. With his memory restored, Optimus regains the power of the Matrix as well as his leadership of the Autobots. The main theme for the rest of the season is the discovery of ancient relics from Cybertron buried on Earth with the Transformers fighting over each new discovery which ultimately leads their battle all the way back to Cybertron. New characters introduced in the second season include a young Autobot named Smokescreen, Optimus’ old mentor, the archivist known as Alpha Trion, Optimus’ evil twin, Nemesis Prime, and the Decepticons known as Shockwave and Dreadwing as well as a swarm of Insecticons led by Hardshell. At the end of the season, both sides fight for control over the four Omega Keys (which can activate the Omega Lock, the only thing that can restore Cybertron) and Starscream returns to the Decepticons after going rogue for most of the season. Dreadwing is killed attempting to murder Starscream for turning Skyquake into a Terrorcon in the previous season, and both sides clash on Cybertron, with the Autobots gaining control of the keys. However, when the Decepticons steal the keys back and threaten to destroy all life on Earth with the Omega Lock, Optimus lashes out and destroys it. Little do the Autobots know, however, that Megatron used the Omega Lock to create a fortress, called Darkmount, outside the Autobots’ base; the Decepticons having finally learned its location. When the other Autobots, Jack, Miko, and Raf evacuate the base to avoid capture, Optimus remains behind to destroy the Ground Bridge controls and is caught in an explosion caused by the Nemesis that destroys the Autobot base. With the help of information from Starscream, the Autobots commandeer the Decepticons’ space bridge to send Jack and Arcee to the Transformers’ home world of Cybertron, with a plan to use the information stored in Vector Sigma to restore Optimus’ memories. Meanwhile, after a run-in with Starscream (whom Megatron claimed was dead), Orion wonders if Megatron is telling him the whole truth. On Cybertron, while searching for Vector Sigma, Jack and Arcee are attacked by an Insecticon and a swarm of Scraplets. On the Nemesis, Orion becomes ever more curious about who he really is, so he begins to rebel against Megatron and uncover the elaborate lies put in front of him. The hunt begins for ancient Cybertronain relics hidden on Earth. While investigating an energy signature that may lead to a relic, Bumblebee is ambushed by M.E.C.H., who knock him out and steal his T-cog (the device that enables Transformers to scan alternate modes and transform). Left unable to transform into vehicle mode, Bumblebee has no choice but to stay at base. Starscream approaches Silas (the leader of M.E.C.H.) and offers advice and knowledge on Cybertronian anatomy. Wheeljack returns to Earth in pursuit of the Decepticon Dreadwing, who is responsible for the death of the Wrecker Seaspray, and asks for Team Prime’s help in apprehending him. While Bulkhead is excited about seeing his best friend again, Optimus Prime soon becomes annoyed with Wheeljack’s recklessness, aggression, and disregard for civilians during their search for Dreadwing. Megatron sends Breakdown, Airachnid and Dreadwing in search of energon in a forest, with Airachnid unaware that Breakdown and Dreadwing have actually been ordered to terminate her for treason. She catches on to the plan and flees, killing Breakdown in the process, and upon encountering a lone Insecticon, she uses her abilities to control it, and challenges Megatron to a fight to the death. Agent Fowler is forced to explain recent events to his superior, General Bryce. Threatened with a military tribunal and Team Prime’s termination, Fowler tries to convince Bryce that the Autobots are still on the military’s side, but Bryce believes that Optimus went rogue and has perished, failing to fully understand that Nemesis Prime was not the real Optimus. Ratchet reluctantly calls upon Wheeljack for back-up in his mission to retrieve the third Iacon relic, a sonic weapon called the Resonance Blaster. On their way to the location, the two Autobots are attacked by Soundwave, but Wheeljack manages to shoot down and disable Soundwave’s surveillance drone Laserbeak, which gives Ratchet an idea. While Wheeljack and Soundwave fight over the Resonance Blaster, Ratchet uploads a virus into Laserbeak that will download the Iacon Database into the Autobot base’s computers without the Decepticons noticing. Bulkhead goes to a volcanic island on the Equator to find the fourth and final Iacon relic. But to his horror, he discovers that the relic is a piece of Tox-En, a form of highly toxic Energon that is lethal to Transformers. He tries to dispose of the tox-en by throwing it into a volcano, but it deteriorates his strength, and things are made worse when a group of Insecticons led by Hardshell arrive in search of the relic. Bulkhead is left in a critical condition and on the verge of death after his fight with the Insecticons and exposure to Tox-En. Distraught about what has happened to their friend, Miko and Wheeljack head out to find Hardshell and get revenge. Miko becomes frustrated with Bulkhead’s slow recovery and storms out of the base. Finding Miko weeping by herself, Arcee tries to cheer her up by telling the story of how she and her last battle partner Cliffjumper first came to Earth. Starscream had captured Arcee and Cliffjumper and took them to be interrogated by the Decepticon scientist Shockwave, and upon escaping they discover Shockwave’s plan to build a space bridge to Earth. During a fight with the Decepticons, Team Prime is unexpectedly aided by Smokescreen, a young and impulsive Autobot. Despite Arcee and Ratchet’s distrust in the newcomer, Optimus Prime invites Smokescreen to the base for further training. Meanwhile, Starscream discovers that a meteorite of red energon (which grants the consumer enhanced speed) has crashed on Earth, and sets out to claim it for himself. Scientists implant the dying Silas into a battle armor and life-support system made from Breakdown’s dead body. Silas kills the scientists and approaches Megatron, asking for a position in the Decepticon ranks and offering to aid their cause with Project: Damocles, a sattellite-based laser weapon system of his own invention. Optimus Prime gives Jack the task of helping Smokescreen learn about human society and adapt to living on Earth. The Decepticons detect another Iacon relic, the legendary Star Saber, and Megatron sends out a set of decoy coordinates to distract the Autobots, so he can claim the Star Saber for himself. Optimus Prime discovers that the Star Saber is embedded with a message from his former mentor Alpha Trion. In this message, Alpha Trion explains about four Iacon relics called the Omega Keys, which when brought together are able to make Cybertron inhabitable again. Meanwhile, Megatron opens the tomb of a deceased Prime on Cybertron, taking an arm and having it attached to him so he can use the Forge of Solus Prime to build a weapon strong enough to counter the Star Saber. Team Prime continue to collect the Omega Keys, but the Decepticons (who are unaware of what the keys can do, but are curious about Team Prime’s determination to have them) out-smart them at every turn. After Smokescreen storms out of the base, blaming himself for the team’s failure to obtain the keys, the decoded coordinates of the final key reveal it is inside Smokescreen’s body. The Autobots head out to find him, but he is captured by Soundwave and Laserbeak. Season Finale Megatron activates the Omega Lock and starts restoring Cybertron, but he then reveals he is also going to use the Lock’s power to turn Earth into a mechanical planet, which would kill all of its inhabitants. Optimus Prime destroys the Lock before it can finish its restoration, saving Earth but dooming Cybertron. The Autobots retreat back to Earth, only to find a gigantic fortress has appeared outside their base, and the Decepticons have finally discovered the base’s location. –Season-3 Beast Hunters–. Following the destruction of their base at the hands of Megatron, the Autobots, along with Jack, Miko, and Raf, are separated and struggle to reconnect with one another. However, Smokescreen returns to Jasper to rescue Optimus Prime, who is close to death. Meanwhile, Shockwave returns, having cloned an ancient Cybertronian, dragon-like beast called a Predacon in hopes of having it hunt down the Autobots. While Smokescreen tries to find a way to save Optimus, Ultra Magnus comes to Earth to lend the Autobots a hand as the Predacon named Predaking starts to get intelligent. With their base destroyed, the Autobots and their human companions have separated and gone into hiding, while the Decepticons settle into their new fortress, Darkmount, and repel a military assault. Smokescreen finds Optimus Prime, still alive but badly damaged and close to death, in the wreckage of the Autobot base. As the Autobots try to re-group, Shockwave arrives in Darkmount after years of isolation on Cybertron, and is welcomed back into the Decepticon ranks. Wheeljack escapes from Darkmount and sets off to rendezvous with Bulkhead and Miko, unaware that Starscream has planted a tracking device on him. After Starscream’s armada fails to apprehend Wheeljack, Shockwave introduces Predaking, an enormous reptilian creature created in Shockwave’s laboratory and specially bred to hunt down Autobots. Meanwhile, high-ranking Autobot general Ultra Magnus arrives on Earth and sets about reuniting the scattered members of Team Prime. The Autobots attack Darkmount in an attempt to disable its firepower to allow human military to destroy it. As Optimus prepares to join with the Allspark, Smokescreen uses the Forge to repair him, and makes him a new, more powerful body. Optimus joins the Autobots at Darkmount and, with human support, destroys Darkmount. The Autobots adjust to new group dynamics within their expanded team and Optimus Prime scans a new vehicle form, but Smokescreen privately starts to regret not becoming a Prime. The Decepticons, having found fossilized Predacon bones on Earth, launch a scheme to clone an army of Predacons through the same method that created Predaking. Ultra Magnus, Wheeljack, Bulkhead and Miko are in the wilderness of Scotland investigating a Decepticon excavation site for Predacon fossils, but tension builds between the group as Wheeljack acts recklessly and ignores Magnus’s commands. On the Nemesis, Starscream is given the task of training Predaking, but he struggles to get the uncooperative beast to follow orders. While Arcee and Wheeljack are on a mission to gather a Predacon bone, Agent Fowler and June collect another bone in storage at a museum. As they leave, however, Knock Out captures them and holds them hostage in the trunk of his vehicle mode, but soon finds that he is unable to call for a Ground Bridge because the communications systems on the Nemesis are damaged. Knock Out is researching Ratchet’s Synthetic Energon formula, and is using Silas (who is still implanted within Breakdown’s corpse) as a test subject. The formula makes Silas extremely aggressive, so Starscream suggests injecting him with Dark Energon to make him easier to control. However, the mixture of the two Energons turns Silas into a mindless zombie craving fresh Energon, and he wanders the ship infecting any crew member he encounters by draining their Energon. The Predacon army is almost fully grown and ready for deployment, but Predaking suddenly surprises everyone by revealing he is able to transform and is more intelligent than first thought. Despite Predaking pledging his loyalty, Megatron still worries that he will eventually lead the Predacons to rebel against the Decepticons, so he plans to terminate Project: Predacon by leading the Autobots to the laboratory and having them unwittingly destroy the clones for them. Having discovered that the combination of Predacon CNA and Synthetic Energon creates raw cyber-matter (the substance Cybertron is made of), the Decepticons plan to repair the Omega Lock, restore Cybertron and cyberform Earth through this process. While gathering equipment for the project, Soundwave is captured by the Autobots, who take him to their base and try to interrogate him about Megatron’s plans, but he deletes all of his information and shuts himself down. Laserbeak eventually finds the base and re-activates Soundwave, who proceeds to capture Ratchet. The Decepticons hold Ratchet captive, and Megatron attempts to persuade him to help complete the synthetic energon formula and restore Cybertron. Rafael and Wheeljack build a flying drone and attach Laserbeak’s transponder (which Smokescreen shot off) to it, in the hope that Laserbeak’s navigation systems will lead the Autobots to Ratchet so they can rescue him. Ratchet reluctantly agrees to help the Decepticons perfect the synthetic energon formula. But once it is completed, he decides he can’t allow the Decepticons to have it or finish building their new Omega Lock, so he sabotages the project and tries to escape from the ship. The Autobots launch their drone and Optimus Prime follows it, but along the way he is confronted by Starscream and his armada. Last Episode The Autobots storm the Nemesis and try to reach the Omega Lock before the Decepticons can activate it and cyberform Earth. Optimus Prime and Megatron face off in a final showdown, while the other Autobots fight off the Decepticon army and race to secure the lock. Four friends Kalim (Angad Bedi), Gautam (Neil Bhoopalam), Maya (Kangana Ranaut) and Abhay (Randeep Hooda) form a gang called the 'Ungli' gang which fights against corruption prevailing in society. Their job is to target corrupt people and punish them in a very unique manner. Due to increased popularity and their high profile targets they are sought by Mumbai police department as 'wanted'. Their case is the responsibility of ACP Ashok Kale (Sanjay Dutt) and inspector Nikhil Abhyankar (Emraan Hashmi). Nikhil disguises himself as a college student and joins the ungli gang with hidden motive of arresting them. But soon, his heart changes after learning the story of why ungli gang waw formed. Meanwhile, Kaale is compelled to seek help from the gang when Nikhil helps him expose the gang's greatest target, B.R. Dayal (Mahesh Manjrekar) and his son Anshuman. Kaale instigates a sting operation against the Mumbai police and is successful in preventing his transfer. Kaale thanks the 'Ungli' gang.|. There is no story. It gives feeling of episodic compilation of some common problems, faced by public. No connection between all incidents. Dialogues by Milan Milap Zaveri, are very good. Starting 15 minutes, film sounds good but as it progresses, it takes downward journey only. I support this type of idea or issue based film, so I am positively biased with this type of film and cursing myself to write against it but I am helpless. It is at least better than all that craps who don't have anything to tell and execution remains bad too. Makers believe that a blind person can't recognize anyone because in a scene Randeep Hooda talks to his love interest with mask, even for few minutes but she was unable to recognize him!!? Can Deepawali heavy crackers erupt the road!? This road was erupted in night but remains same in next day being it is very important to one of a powerful person!!? Climax could have been very interesting and innovative but having the germs they could not make it even good. It is bad actually. Everything has taken for granted that this have to happen so it happened. Love interest was not required at all. There are lots of contradiction of the statement and behavior of main characters. They use masks to hide their identity and then also resist a person who does the work like them only and shockingly they were very much concerned about their image, when they are just mask man then if anyone does good job using mask it would have been fine for them. They are not doing a business so they oppose a same stuff doing rival. Few scenes are good but unrealistic. The running in stadium and the traffic police scene are good but again presentation was pushy. Performance wise lots of good actors are nothing to do. Surprisingly Randeep Hooda is very good. Sanjay Datt, Emran Hashmi, Kangana Ranuat and Neha Dhupiya is just OK. Music is good. Credit Graham Roumieu Is there a best day to get the lowest price on a flight? Many travelers think the magic day is Tuesday, long lauded by travel deal sites and various publications, including this one, for its fare sales. Other travelers may have heard pundits declare Wednesday the ideal day. In December, Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation, which processes ticket transactions for airlines and travel agencies, announced that weekends are the new best time. But is there really a preferred day to buy? “I just want to drive a stake through the heart of that myth,” said George Hobica, the founder of the deal alert site, who has been looking at airfares on popular routes every day for more than 20 years, with the rare exception of a vacation where he doesn’t have Internet access. There are too many variables at play for there to be a universally ideal day to buy an airline ticket. Price depends on a variety of factors, including the route; the level of competition on the route; surrounding holidays and events (like a convention or the Super Bowl); and the days of the week you plan to fly. During a single week in March, for example, a recent search for a round-trip flight between New York and Miami turned up ticket prices as low as $174 and as high as $314. Besides, nowadays we have fare calendars at our fingertips and websites such as Kayak and Travelzoo that alert us to low fares and sales — and those sales don’t always take place on the same day of the week. Hobica pointed out, for instance, that on a recent Thursday, Virgin Atlantic lowered nonstop winter flights to Heathrow Airport in London from John F. Kennedy International Airport or Newark Liberty International Airport to about $504 round-trip. Economy fares had been running $900, Mr. Hobica said, then $800, then they went back up, and after that they dipped to around $680. In addition to recommending the best times of the week to book, Expedia and other sites such as FareCompare publish suggestions about how far in advance of a trip to book to score the lowest fare. For instance, Expedia reported in December that the optimal time to buy an economy ticket for travel in North America is 57 days in advance, resulting in a potential savings of about 10 percent versus the average fare. Recommended lead times for travel to international destinations, including Europe and Asia-Pacific, were even longer. Travelers shouldn’t think of predictions as rules, though. There are flights to Asia, for example, that are $500 cheaper when booked at the last minute as opposed to months in advance, Mr. And talking about the “average fare” isn’t necessarily helpful because that doesn’t take into account the quality of a flight. Is it nonstop or does it have a 34-minute connection in a busy, sprawling airport like Atlanta? Dec 11, 2017. The new Expedia app is your all-in-one travel companion. Is it an 18-hour layover in Dallas that will require you to spend an additional $300 in hotel bills and meals? Are you flying in an aisle seat in a Dreamliner or in the middle seat in a MD-80? And if that cheap ticket you found is on a discount airline like Spirit or Frontier, chances are you’ll have to budget another $30 to $100 to check a bag. In other words, you probably don’t want the average fare. If you want to sit next to your companion, be a safe distance from the bathroom, put your bag in an overhead compartment instead of the belly of the plane, and have enough time to make a connection, what you really want are good fares that may not be the absolute cheapest, but give you the experience you want. The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, statistics, physics, biology and finance. The book teaches 'Matlab-style' and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background and it is advantageous to study classical and numerical one-variable calculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of science and engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science. Alex Small, IEEE, CiSE Vol. 14 (2), March /April 2012 “This fourth edition is a wonderful, inclusive textbook that covers pretty much everything one needs to know to go from zero to fairly sophisticated scientific programming in Python” Joan Horvath, Computing Reviews, March 2015. Hans Petter Langtangen is a professor of computer science at the University of Oslo. He has formerly been a professor of mechanics and is now the director of a Norwegian Center of Excellence: 'Center for Biomedical Computing', at Simula Research Laboratory. Langtangen has published over 100 scientific publications and written several books, including papers and the bestseller TCSE 6 'A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python', now in its 5th edition. He has also developed open source and commercial software systems for computational sciences. “This update to previous editions continues to serve as an excellent introduction to scientific programming and the Python programming language. Each chapter has a significant collection of exercises, which reinforce the concepts contained in the chapter. This is an excellent book for any individual starting to learn scientific programming, and it will serve as a great reference book for those working in the field. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates.” (D. Mason, Choice, Vol. 54 (9), May, 2017) “The authors have made a very concerted effort to describe Python in a very easy, flowing way with many useful case studies. I have no hesitation in recommending this book for senior high school students or freshmen in college. One must certainly have access to the Python development environment, and this book will be a worthy companion in the journey to mastering programming concepts.” (Naga Narayanaswamy, Computing Reviews, May, 2017) “All the concepts are illustrated using relatively simple examples that are mostly mathematical. This book gives a thorough course to learn Python, and yet it is all brought at the level of a first year at the university. The fact that each concept is introduced with an example is essential. It is a description of how the language is used, which is a very natural approach.” (European Mathematical Society, euro-math-soc.eu, August, 2016). For this reason, the internal connections in a computer, ie: the busses, are linked together to allow parallel communication. However, the use of parallel communication for longer distance data communication is unfeasible for economic and practical reasons, eg: amount of extra cable required and synchronisation difficulties. Therefore, all long distance data communications takes place over serial connections. Click on this link for the detailed wikipedia resource on. Serial sender receiver sender receiver data line parallel serial data line. A groups of bits is transmitted simultaneously in parallel transmission over a bundled of lines in. What is data transmission? Refers to the process of transferring data between two or more digital devices. Data is transmitted from one device to another in analog or digital format. Basically, data transmission enables devices or components within devices to speak to each other. How does data transmission work between digital devices? Data is transferred in the form of bits between two or more digital devices. There are two methods used to transmit data between digital devices: serial transmission and parallel transmission. Serial data transmission sends data bits one after another over a single channel. Parallel data transmission sends multiple data bits at the same time over multiple channels. What is serial transmission? When data is sent or received using, the data bits are organized in a specific order, since they can only be sent one after another. The order of the data bits is important as it dictates how the transmission is organized when it is received. It is viewed as a reliable data transmission method because a data bit is only sent if the previous data bit has already been received. Example of Serial Data Transmission Serial transmission has two classifications: asynchronous and synchronous. Asynchronous Serial Transmission Data bits can be sent at any point in time. Stop bits and start bits are used between data bytes to synchronize the transmitter and receiver and to ensure that the data is transmitted correctly. The time between sending and receiving data bits is not constant, so gaps are used to provide time between transmissions. The advantage of using the asynchronous method is that no synchronization is required between the transmitter and receiver devices. It is also a more cost effective method. A disadvantage is that data transmission can be slower, but this is not always the case. Synchronous Serial Transmission Data bits are transmitted as a continuous stream in time with a master clock. The data transmitter and receiver both operate using a synchronized clock frequency; therefore, start bits, stop bits, and gaps are not used. This means that data moves faster and timing errors are less frequent because the transmitter and receiver time is synced. However, data accuracy is highly dependent on timing being synced correctly between devices. In comparison with asynchronous serial transmission, this method is usually more expensive. When is serial transmission used to send data? Serial transmission is normally used for long-distance data transfer. It is also used in cases where the amount of data being sent is relatively small. It ensures that data integrity is maintained as it transmits the data bits in a specific order, one after another. In this way, data bits are received in-sync with one another. What is parallel transmission? When data is sent using, multiple data bits are transmitted over multiple channels at the same time. This means that data can be sent much faster than using serial transmission methods. Example of Parallel Data Transmission Given that multiple bits are sent over multiple channels at the same time, the order in which a bit string is received can depend on various conditions, such as proximity to the data source, user location, and bandwidth availability. Two examples of parallel interfaces can be seen below. In the first parallel interface, the data is sent and received in the correct order. In the second parallel interface, the data is sent in the correct order, but some bits were received faster than others. Example of Parallel Transmission – Data Received Incorrectly Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Parallel Data Transmission The main advantages of parallel transmission over serial transmission are: • it is easier to program; • and data is sent faster. Although parallel transmission can transfer data faster, it requires more transmission channels than serial transmission. This means that data bits can be out of sync, depending on transfer distance and how fast each bit loads. A simple of example of where this can be seen is with a voice over IP (VOIP) call when distortion or interference is noticeable. It can also be seen when there is skipping or interference on a video stream. When is parallel transmission used to send data? Parallel transmission is used when: • a large amount of data is being sent; • the data being sent is time-sensitive; • and the data needs to be sent quickly. A scenario where parallel transmission is used to send data is video streaming. When a video is streamed to a viewer, bits need to be received quickly to prevent a video pausing or buffering. Video streaming also requires the transmission of large volumes of data. The data being sent is also time-sensitive as slow data streams result in poor viewer experience.
